Who is Goethe?
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a man of numerous talents, poetry, science, literature, philosophy, … Goethe was someone curious and talented. For German’s origins, he lived 82 years (1749 to 1832). Seen as one of the of the main figure of the German culture, his Faust is still well-known nowadays.
What does the sentence mean?
Attributed to Goethe, this sentence means each one of your moves is led by an idea. You move towards your parents to tell something, you move towards your boss to tell something, you move towards you client to tell something, … because you have an idea, an ideal that you want to reach, so you dare moving forwards.
You may be getting what you want from your parents, you may not have the promotion you want from your boss, you may not do the sell to your client, but there is no certainty. Daring can also led you to get what you want, becoming more recognized, considered, rich, … You cannot be sure of the result if you do not try. You have just one life, and it is better to live without any regrets than tell yourself that you lived a safe life, but not the one you really wanted.
Remember than in a chess game you do not have only one possibility to start, you have many, and different possibilities. Consider each one of your possibilities, you can be bold or you can be a bit safer, but if you want to have a result, you have to take decisions. Do not be afraid if what you want takes time, Rome was not built in a day.
How it can be applied to you?
I you want to obtain something in your work, think about what are the steps you need to do to get what you want, like in a chess game. In chess you know that in order to win you need the defeat the king, that is your objective and you need to move forwards to archive it. At work it is the same thing, if you want a promotion for example, that is your objective, so you have to think about all the moves you need to do it get it. If one of your friends in your company get a promotion, you can copy the main step your friend did (archive some results, having that kind of specific skills, solving some problems, … it will be specific for each person).
Good strategy/Bad strategy
Every one of us at some point have thought at some strategy to get something, and sometimes it did not work as expected, and we wonder why. In the book “Good strategy/Bad strategy” the author explain that strategy is a construct of several efforts oriented to specific points to get the best results. A good strategy at a business level can be difficult to reach because of conflict interest, because of different vision, so companies let it blurry to avoid any trouble.
